A stretch ceiling is a suspended ceiling system that has two basic components that include a perimeter track and a lightweight fabric membrane that can stretch. It is installed by clipping the fabric into the track. Stretch ceilings are made from PVC film which is welded onto the perimeter. It allows fixtures such as stretch ceiling lighting, sprinklers, security equipment, etc. and it does not require any kind of maintenance whatsoever. It is, therefore, a great option to be considered when looking for ceilings.
Stretch Ceiling Lighting Can Come In A Very Diverse and Attractive Range
The stretch ceiling material allows a great opportunity for installation of clean, cool or colorful lighting which will leave an impact on anybody who sees it. The material is very lightweight and only 0.2mm thick and allows approximately 75% light transmission. The membrane allows all kinds of light fittings such as LED’s, fluorescent, cold cathode, fiber optics, light cannons, spots etc. to create a unique lighting experience.
The different types of lights that can be incorporated provide different advantages and produce different types of effects. Lights that can be installed onto stretch ceilings are:
Spots
these are mainly used in commercial buildings to provide adequate and apt lighting solutions. They are placed in large numbers all along the perimeter. The advantages of using such light include that they do not heat the ceiling or overheat the plenum. They are directional and therefore lead to great lighting and do not use too much electricity.
Fiber Optics
They are ideal for use to create a soft ambiance or a starry effect in the ceiling. This type of Stretch ceiling lighting can be installed, embedded or suspended from the stretch ceiling. However, to install the fiber optic lights and its plenum a minimum space of 150mm is required.
Light Emitting Diode (LED) Lights
They can be installed in a translucent sheet of walls or ceilings to create a homogeneous diffusion of light. They are ideal when the objective is to create subdued lighting. To avoid dust, insects or any other unwanted material that can deteriorate the aesthetics of the lights it is advised that a transparent sheet is installed between the lights and the ceiling membrane.
The advantages of having an LED Light system include low electricity consumption, great lifespan, a wide choice of colors, compactness, the possibility of creating effects, etc. A minimum of 100mm of space is required to keep between the lights and the stretch ceiling and at least 150mm of space for its installation.
Fluorescent Tubes
They provide the necessary power and adequate temperature of light. The advantages of installing this type of light are that it provides power lighting, simple installation, and affordable cost among others.
The stretch ceiling lighting can be changed by fixing the membrane on a demountable frame for frequent access to the lights or alternatively for low-cost, low-maintenance lighting which can be changed as and when the need arises. If the ceiling is not demountable then a team of professionals will have to be called for reinstallation. It is also possible to project logos, images or any material according to the requirement of the user on the membrane. This can be done when the stretch material is used in wall panels or art pieces etc.
Stretch ceiling lighting can be done in a large number of ways to suit every requirement and taste. It is a great option for anyone looking for an out-of-the-box light effect or even classic lighting. This system can be used not only in ceilings but other applications like wall coverings, floating panels, exhibitions, and creative structures. It is an excellent material as it can be installed very quickly and easily without making any mess. It is installed in one piece and does not require furniture to be moved or leave behind any construction debris.
