Suspended Slab – An Overview

There are some floor slabs that are made in such a way that there is no direct contact with the ground. Their main usage lies in creating floors for upper storeys of buildings. It can also be used to make the ground floor by making the slab sit on the pre-constructed walls. These slabs are generally made out of concrete and are known as suspended slabs.

Components of a suspended slab

The slabs on the ground are mainly made up of steel mesh and concrete. Likewise, the suspended slabs are also made out of concrete and steel mesh. These slabs are produced away from the construction site and then carried by trucks to the site. There are some slabs which are hollowed out on the inner part. This helps in decreasing the weight of these slabs, and so that the piping can be done easily along with cabling.

Suspended slabs and its feature

  1. The working ability of the slabs is high so it is pumpable.

  2. Compacting can be easily done in these slabs.

  3. These slabs are so made that it can be placed without any difficulty.

  4. The suspended slabs are made in a way that it can be finished easily.

Suspended slabs may bend in various ways and this depends on the number of walls it requires for support. The principal steel must be reinforced in a way that it is positioned in different places to spread out the tension evenly. Maximum support is provided by the rebar that is placed in parallel direction with the short span. This will help the slab which is supported by two walls from bending in the middle. A steel mesh shall be used as a base for a slab which is supported by four walls from sagging in the middle. This mesh is generally placed where two layers are used.

Installation of the slab

A suspended slab is made from beforehand in a place which is away from the site of construction and is carried by a truck to reach the site. The slab is then lifted up with the help of a crane to be positioned in its place. This type of foundations shall be used in places with enough space for placing the slab otherwise some other problems may come to exist. After placing the slab in the right position, the edges are filled in or rather it is sealed to make it waterproof. There is another layer of concrete added to this slab. This acts as a covering on the top.

The places where a suspended slab is used

The suspended slabs are mainly used in buildings with multiple storeys. At times, these slabs are also used for constructing the ground floor. This is also very commonly done in hilly areas. A site can be dug and the concrete walls shall be made for support so that the slab can be placed till the ground level.

Advantages of suspended slabs

  1. These slabs can be used in places where other slabs cannot be used, such as in hilly regions.

  2. The slabs allow for an entrance to the area underneath the floor.

  3. If the supporting walls and machineries are put in the right place, then it becomes easier to install suspended slabs.

  4. These slabs act as a good barrier for noise from one floor to another.
