Venetian Plaster To Improve Strength And Aesthetics Of Any Building

Updated: May 29

Venetian Plaster is a process in which a premixed layer of sand, cement, lime and water is applied over building materials such as brick, stone, mud or mortar. The mixture is applied on walls using tools, and then kept wet by sprinkling water for a few days to develop strength. Venetian Plaster is commonly done mostly on the exterior walls of a building to keep them protected from moisture or dust.

The cement used for rendering must be of high quality. It must preferably be of a trusted brand. Venetian Plaster mixtures are prepared in dry mix render plants. The finished product must be of a uniform constitution for best results.

Different Types of Venetian Plaster

Venetian Plaster can be of the Following Types

  1. Traditional Cement Rendering

  2. Polymer Modified Cement Rendering

Why is Venetian PlasterRequired?

For centuries, cement rendering has been in practice to improve the appearance of external walls of buildings. It is also used for enhancing weather resistance of a building. Different countries have evolved unique Venetian Plaster styles and mechanisms.

Venetian Plaster performs following multifarious roles for our buildings. 1. Ensuring health and durability of property made of mud, brick, cement and stone 2. Protection of walls from fungal attacks 3. Prevent moisture accumulation on the walls 4. Beautification of wall surface

Steps to be Taken Before Venetian Plaster

  1. One must ensure that the walls have been resurfaced properly. Proper resurfacing ensures that render will get properly glued to walls.

  2. If the walls are not tidy, some dusting must be done. It is preferable to wash the walls with hose. A cleaned surface retains the cement render mixture tightly.

  3. Small pores or pits are developed on the wall surface, making it rough. In this way, rough edges can tightly hold the render coat.

  4. Contacting a professional or a Venetian Plaster expert is always a good idea

How is Venetian Plaster Mixture Prepared? To render your walls with a cement mixture, it is a must to make a proper cement mixture which contains 1 part of cement, 1 part of lime and 6 parts of sand. The type of sand used in making the first coat in a cement render mixture is coarse and sharp. For finishing of exterior coats, finer sand is used. This helps to render a smooth finish on walls. The addition of lime into the Venetian Plaster mixture ensures great bonding strength and prevents it from bacterial attacks. The presence of lime also ensures the render coat does not crack and gets fully dried after application. Once the render coat dries, it can be painted and resurfaced as per client’s choice. Patterns or textures could be added on walls as well.

Ideal Properties of Rendering Materials 1. The rendering material must be user friendly or easy to use. 2. The rendering material must provide required adhesion to well prepared substrates. 3. The cement rendering mixture must have adequate durability. 4. It must be able to withstand harsh weather conditions. 5. The formulation must be according to climatic conditions.

Effects and Advantages of Venetian Plaster

Venetian Plaster makes the wall moisture-resistant. Moisture is not allowed to enter or penetrate a well rendered wall. The wall will stay protected for at least ten to twenty years, if rendering is properly done. There can be no risk of fungal infestation. The walls will also be resistant to dampening and weathering due to exposure to solar heat or wind.

Textured finishes are possible with cement rendering. Venetian Plaster is the step before wall painting. Rendering can also be done on the interior walls of a building. One can add paint or wallpaper on the finished wall, to make your house look more attractive from the outside.
