Differences between a Drive in and Drive Through Racking System The first point that differentiates these two is that the drive-through system has a separate entry/exit point, while the drive-in system does not. A rack for a drive-through system is considered a good option for pallets that are data sensitive because it is rotated in a FIFO method. The other differences are- A drive-through rack will always require an additional aisle, which creates a less density of storage when compared to a drive in pallet racking system. Now this feature of requirement of additional aisle ensures that the user can create various layouts for different space requirements. The biggest advantage enjoyed by a drive-through system is that it is very efficient when it comes to separating and handling isles. Since the stock is rotated on its own, the pickers need not handle the pallets more than one time and are usually assured of choosing the first pallet that is in the system. This design helps in minimizing the damage because the drivers are frequently not required to enter the lanes for removing the products. This factor is more of a similarity than a difference between the two systems. All the users who use pallets should stick to the safety guidelines prescribed in the instruction manual. Any damage seen in either system should be reported immediately and the pallet system should be replaced or repaired. The other types of racks seen in the market include the selective rack, pallet flow rack, and the push back rack.
Selective rack – The rack can store many SKUs. Also, the mix of the storage can be changed, too. Although, it has a drawback of lower storage density in comparison to other alternatives.
Pushback rack – The pallets are placed by a forklift on carts that are nested, which ride on inclined rails.
Pallet flow rack- The rack the storage density and offers systematic first in, first out type of pallet flow.
